Equipped with a gas operated mechanism that is usually-found in rifles, the Desert Eagle allows shooters much more powerful cartridges than traditional semi-automatic pistols.
In a nutshell, when you fire a round from a Desert Eagle pistol,
gasses-spill into a small hole near the breech of the barrel. Those
gasses-travels to a cylinder near the front of the barrel which push the
piston rearward. The bolt carrier sits on two rails and operates the
mechanism.
The downside of this gas port system is the size of the firearm required to allow such a system to exist.
Shooters today enjoy a number of rounds-that work well in Desert Eagle
pistols. 357 magnum, 44 magnum or 50 AE are all very common with a
6-inch barrel-considered "standard" by the manufacturer.
